There are times when communities are measured not by what they have, but by how they respond when others need them most.
This wildfire season has changed the landscape of Northwestern Ontario in ways many of us never imagined. Families have been forced from their homes, communities have faced uncertainty, and countless people have spent long days wondering what tomorrow might bring. Yet, in the middle of that uncertainty, something equally powerful has emerged: compassion.
When the United Way Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay Community Foundation launched the Northwestern Ontario Wildfire Community Support Fund, they hoped to raise $25,000 to help communities recover. What happened next was a beautiful reminder of the kindness that exists all around us. In less than three days, that goal was surpassed. Today, donations continue to arrive not only from across Northwestern Ontario, but from every corner of Canada, the United States, and even Australia. It is proof that when one community hurts, many others quietly step forward to help carry the weight.
For Lakehead Rotary, this is what "Service Above Self" looks like.
We were grateful to learn from Albert Brulé, CEO of the United Way and a fellow Rotarian, just how meaningful the support has been. Inspired by the generosity already shown throughout our community, the Lakehead Rotary Board of Directors unanimously approved a $5,000 donation to the Northwestern Ontario Wildfire Community Support Fund knowing it will help provide support where it is needed most.
Rotary has always believed that the strongest communities are built through people who choose to care. We cannot stop a wildfire. We cannot erase the hardship families have endured. But together, we can remind our neighbours that they are not facing it alone. If you have been considering making a personal contribution, we encourage you to do so if you are able. Every gift, no matter its size, becomes part of something much larger: hope, recovery, and the promise that when Northwestern Ontario needs us, we will always answer the call together.
