When Rick Thompson arrived at the morning meeting for Lakehead Rotary, he brought more than a box of naloxone kits. He brought knowledge, compassion, and a reminder that sometimes the smallest actions can make the biggest difference.
As members gathered, Rick distributed kits and encouraged everyone to take one. What followed was an honest and eye-opening conversation about the realities facing our community. He explained how quickly an overdose can happen, how easily the signs can be mistaken for someone simply sleeping, and how important it is to act without hesitation. With patience and care, Rick demonstrated how naloxone is administered and walked members through the simple but critical steps: assess the situation, attempt to awake, call 911, and administer naloxone. He shared practical advice, challenged common misconceptions, and spoke about the importance of reducing stigma so that people feel safe seeking help.
Perhaps one of the most important messages of the morning was that substance use does not discriminate. It can touch people from every walk of life, regardless of age, background, education, profession, or circumstance. Rick reminded us that behind every overdose is a person who is loved by someone, and that compassion, understanding, and a willingness to help can make a profound difference. The visit left Rotary members with more than a lifesaving tool. It left them with a greater understanding of the challenges many people face, a deeper sense of empathy, and the ability to be part of the solution. Thanks to Rick's generosity, expertise, and heartfelt commitment to helping others, our club is now better equipped to respond when someone needs help most.
