Libraries have always been about far more than books. They are places where children discover a love of reading, entrepreneurs find inspiration, newcomers build connections, and neighbours come together to learn, create, and belong.
Lakehead Rotary was pleased to welcome guest speakers Richard Togman and Meagan Ross, who shared an inspiring look at the future of the Thunder Bay Public Library's Waverley Resource Centre. Their presentation painted a vision of a space thoughtfully designed for the next generation, while respecting the building's rich history as it celebrates 75 years of serving our community.
The reimagined library will feature welcoming gathering spaces, expanded programming areas, an Indigenous Knowledge Centre, collaborative workspaces, a youth STEM lab, Northern Ontario's largest children's library, and improved accessibility throughout. Just as importantly, the design embraces the identity of Thunder Bay itself, celebrating the diversity of our community and honouring the rich Indigenous heritage that has shaped this region for generations. It is a place where everyone can see themselves reflected and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
As construction moves closer, this project represents more than a renovation. It is an investment in people, in lifelong learning, and in creating a vibrant community hub that will continue to inspire curiosity, strengthen connections, and serve our community for the next 75 years and beyond.
