A Personal Thanks to the Thunder Bay Community
In 1981, I was just four years old, sitting cross legged in my junior kindergarten class. I cannot claim to remember all the details of those days, but I do remember hearing the name Terry Fox. Even as a child, I could sense that he was someone extraordinary, a single person whose courage was capturing the hearts of an entire country.
As I grew older and started a family of my own, I came to understand even more deeply how powerful Terry’s legacy truly was, and how significant his story remains to the community of Thunder Bay. His journey ended here, but his spirit never did. My children, and one day my grandchildren, will continue to learn of Terry’s determination and kindness.
I have been blessed over the years to volunteer with the Lakehead Rotary Club, which helps organize the Terry Fox Run each year in his memory. This year’s theme, Finish It, resonates so strongly. While Terry was not able to complete his Marathon of Hope, Canadians everywhere continue to finish what he started, mile by mile, step by step, year after year.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the survivors, family members, and volunteers who shared their stories yesterday, and to all those who keep Terry’s memory alive through their actions. Together we honour his dream, and together we move closer to the day when cancer will be no more.
With gratitude,
Kyla Jarvinen
