There is a little garden tucked along Boulevard Lake that has been waiting.
Once carefully tended and filled with colour, the Adelaide Butterfly Garden has become quiet and overgrown with time. But beneath the weeds, the garden is still there. And soon, many hands from many communities will come together to help it bloom again.
TbayREAcT, made up of members from all four Thunder Bay Rotary Clubs, is partnering with the City of Thunder Bay and a wonderful circle of community organizations and volunteers to breathe new life into this special space. And this story stretches far beyond one garden.
Rotarians in Nipigon are caring for their own piece of the natural world along the Nipigon River. Across the border, Duluth Rotarians are taking on a similar project of their own. Three communities, connected by water, friendship and Rotary, each leaving something beautiful behind.
On Monday, August 24 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., volunteers from across our community will join forces, united by a shared commitment to restoring the beauty of this special garden. Rotarians from the Port Arthur, Lakehead and Fort William Clubs, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority, and those who have lovingly cared for this space before us will come together to help it bloom once again.
We’ll pull weeds. We’ll dig. We’ll prune, clear and uncover what has been hidden beneath seasons of growth. And little by little, the garden will return.
Perhaps that is what makes this project so special. We are not simply cleaning up a garden. We are restoring a place where butterflies can return, where families can wander, where children can discover something beautiful, and where our community can see what happens when people choose to care for a small corner of the world together.
Bring your gardening gloves, your favourite tools, appropriate footwear and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The garden is very overgrown. Which means there is plenty of opportunity for us to make a difference.
