At the Lakehead Rotary meeting this morning, guest speaker Scott Wilcken (a Lakehead Rotarian and local representative for ID Shield), gave a clear and informative talk on the growing issue of identity theft. As he spoke, many people in the room nodded, recognizing the challenges he described. Several had already dealt with the inconvenience of fraudulent activity or compromised personal information.

Scott walked the group through practical steps to improve personal security. He explained the value of strong passwords, recommending ten to sixteen characters with a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. He also highlighted the benefits of multi-factor authentication, being careful with personal identification, and regularly checking personal records, especially in light of the amount of stolen information circulating online.

He then introduced identity theft protection services offered through ID Shield. Scott outlined four key parts of the program: monitoring of personal information, access to expert advice, restoration support if identity theft occurs, and a security suite that includes a virtual private network and antivirus tools.

Scott concluded by reminding everyone that while identity theft is a growing concern, good habits and the right tools can help individuals and small businesses reduce their risks.  Members of the Lakehead Rotary Club left the presentation thankful to more informed, more cautious, and better prepared for the digital challenges of today.
