As the month of October arrives, Rotary turns its focus to a story that is told in communities all around the world, a story of growth, opportunity, and hope. It is the story of Community Economic Development.
In this story, there are no quick fixes or passing solutions. Instead, Rotary seeks to plant seeds that will grow strong and steady, bringing lasting change. Villages, towns, and cities flourish when people are given the tools to shape their own future, and Rotary works to make that possible.

The heroes in this tale are the entrepreneurs who are taught to dream bigger and manage wisely, the community leaders who are given resources to guide their people, and the families who find stability in work that is meaningful and dignified. Through training, mentorship, and support, new businesses are born, networks are strengthened, and livelihoods improve.  At the heart of this story is the promise of lifting people from poverty, not just for a moment, but in a way that lasts for generations. Children grow up with hope, parents find pride in their work, and communities discover new strength.

This story is not told in isolation. It is part of a larger vision, woven together with Rotary’s other commitments to peace, education, health, clean water, and care for mothers and children. Together, these stories form one great book of service, with October’s chapter shining a special light on the importance of economic development.  And so, each October, Rotarians everywhere are reminded that building stronger economies is not simply about numbers and markets. It is about giving people the chance to live with dignity, to dream, and to write a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
