In its quiet beauty, Belluz Farms offers responsibly farmed food to the community of Thunder Bay and beyond. With only nine days before the busy start of the Thanksgiving festivities, the Lakehead Rotary Club was thankful to be welcomed by Jodi Belluz for a private tour of this picturesque farm.
From strawberries to corn and so many vegetables in between, we gained a deeper appreciation for the care and science behind local farming. We heard inspiring stories of history, learning how Belluz Farms has evolved through generations while remaining committed to responsible environmental practices. We also learned the challenges of natural farming, from pests and weeds to the unpredictability of our northern climate.
The visit offered lessons we can carry through life. The first would be the value of eating seasonally. Though it may seem like a simple idea, it has largely been lost over time. We were reminded that choosing food in season is not only healthier and fresher, but also an act of responsibility. It reduces the strain on long distance supply chains, lowers our environmental footprint, and strengthens the bond we share with local growers who work so hard to nourish our community.
The second lesson, and perhaps more enlightening, was the renewed importance of supporting local farmers. Their work is an act of care. From late night watering to early morning harvests, each step is touched with devotion. Every berry picked by hand and every crop tended with patience reflects a love for the land and a desire to share its gifts. Even the smallest practices, such as guarding delicate plants during a cold snap or carefully managing weeds without chemicals, show the time and tenderness required to provide food of this quality.
Belluz Farms left us inspired with a greater respect for the people who work tirelessly to bring quality food to our tables and reminded us that when we choose local, we are not just buying food, we are investing in healthier lives and stronger communities.  Thank you Jodi.
