Kerry Wirkkunen grew up on the west coast and moved to Thunder Bay to go to school.  While studying diligently, she met the man who would become her husband, and has grown permanent roots in our community.  She has studied both Business Marketing and travel & Tourism.

Kerry current works for CAA North & East Ontario.  CAA was first established in Canada in 1903.  It is a not-for-profit member-based organization with over 6 million members across Canada. Emergency Road Services were added in 1930.  CAA is much more than Roadside Assistance; did you know?
Volker Kromm and Tanner Harris treated us to an excellent breakfast at the Regional Food Distribution Centre (RFDA)

They also let us know some of the things that are happening at the RFDA

MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) - Flying for Life
Imagine yourself travelling on the isolated roads of North Western Ontario.  Your car breaks down, there's no cell service, you are alone.  You wait, and then a car drives by, the good Samaritan stops and provides assistance and all is well.  Now, imagine instead of NW Ontario you are in Angola, Africa.  The nearest town is 200 miles away and you need medical attention.  There are no roads.  You have to walk.  This is one of the situations where MAF can help.  MAF was created in 1945 after a few WW II veteran pilots wanted to use their planes for good.  Fast forward to 2020 and WAF has 130 airplanes and a lot more missionaries, who are helping isolated and remote people in over 30 countries world wide.  They bridge the gap between the developed and the developing world.  Not only do they provide transportation for medical assistance, they haul supplies to isolated communities and provide healthcare and support to people in these remote locations.

Our guest speaker for our meeting on January 30, 2020 was Albert Brule, the CEO of United Way Thunder Bay.  We have always known the United Way as an umbrella fundraising organization, but what do we know about the impact the United Way has on our community.  Albert introduced us to the new 2020 Campaign - #UNIGNORABLE.  The goal of the campaign is to eliminate poverty in Thunder Bay.  This may sound like an ambitious goal, but every small win moves us closer to that goal.

Our guest speaker today was our very own Maya Fillion, daughter of Rotarian Allan Kozlo.  Maya travelled to Japan and South Korea this summer as part of her studies at Queen's University.  Working as part of the marketing team with Education First, Maya helped encourage Japanese students to attend international English-speaking schools.  Maya met people from all over the world during this internship in Tokyo

Congratulations to Olavi Jarvela for receiving a Paul Harris Fellow plus 1.  Making the presentation are Georgina Voulgaris and Karl Ratz.

The countdown is on!  There are only a few more days until our President, Clifford Mushquash, celebrates his birthday on July 20th.  Clifford has challenged all Lakehead Rotarians to celebrate the occasion by making a dollar-per-year donation of $32USD to the Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund.
Our Foundation's mission is "to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvements of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty."  Your donations help the Rotary Foundation Fund service projects throughout the world.
Please click on the following link to donate and make Clifford's birthday wish come true.

At his final Rotary Meeting of 2018/19 President Brian Brescia shared a moment with President-Elect Clifford Mushquash to reflect on the change in Rotary's Theme.  President Brian's year followed RI President Barry Rassin's Theme - BE THE INSPIRATION and President Cliford's year will follow RI President Mark Maloney's Theme - ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD.

Members of the Lakehead Rotary Club and their guests attended a special Bar-B-Q to celebrate the past Rotary Year.  The Roast was on, and President Brian Brescia was in the hot seat.  Brian was thanked for a job well done.  He started the change by providing the opportunity to serve our community at the annual Christmas Party, and he seized every opportunity to include humour in the weekly meetings.  Brian celebrated the 25 years of service of Rotarian Mo Papich, and was able to honor Rotarian of the Year Jennifer Kahan.  Brian passed on the President's Pin (donated by past Rotarian Brian Ross) to President Elect Clifford Mushquash.  He is looking forward to Clifford taking over the reigns.
