LAKEHEAD'S ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR
LORI MARTINEAU - 2019/20

This award is established by the Board of Lakehead Rotary to recognize a Member who has exceeded expectations, provided exceptional service to the Club or Community as a Rotarian, or who is recognized by fellow Members for a significant achievement as a Rotarian in the current Rotary Year. It is not intended to recognize a Member for successive years of achievement or service though this may be acknowledged as the Rotarian of the Year [ROY] is recognized in the current year. Members may receive this honour more than once.
Lakehead's Board of Directors is honoured to recognize LORI MARTINEAU as Lakehead Rotary’s ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR for 2019-2020. Lori’s nomination was unanimously approved and applauded by the Board.
Kerry Wirkkunen grew up on the west coast and moved to Thunder Bay to go to school. While studying diligently, she met the man who would become her husband, and has grown permanent roots in our community. She has studied both Business Marketing and travel & Tourism.
Kerry current works for CAA North & East Ontario. CAA was first established in Canada in 1903. It is a not-for-profit member-based organization with over 6 million members across Canada. Emergency Road Services were added in 1930. CAA is much more than Roadside Assistance; did you know?
Volker Kromm and Tanner Harris treated us to an excellent breakfast at the Regional Food Distribution Centre (RFDA)
They also let us know some of the things that are happening at the RFDA

MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) - Flying for Life
Imagine yourself travelling on the isolated roads of North Western Ontario. Your car breaks down, there's no cell service, you are alone. You wait, and then a car drives by, the good Samaritan stops and provides assistance and all is well. Now, imagine instead of NW Ontario you are in Angola, Africa. The nearest town is 200 miles away and you need medical attention. There are no roads. You have to walk. This is one of the situations where MAF can help. MAF was created in 1945 after a few WW II veteran pilots wanted to use their planes for good. Fast forward to 2020 and WAF has 130 airplanes and a lot more missionaries, who are helping isolated and remote people in over 30 countries world wide. They bridge the gap between the developed and the developing world. Not only do they provide transportation for medical assistance, they haul supplies to isolated communities and provide healthcare and support to people in these remote locations.
