Welcome to all Members
President Clifford Mushquash opened the meeting on July 18, 2019 and welcomed all 19 members to the meeting.
Club Reflections
Karl offered reflections to the group and he referred to an article published in the May Rotarian titled - Putting Civility Back into Civil Discourse a program offered by Better Angels. Everyone is encouraged to read the article pages 35-40 of the May 2019 edition of the Rotarian. The article talks about how a group of individuals from two deeply divided political viewpoints were put together across from each other to talk through a carefully arranged groups of exercises that were designed to help people cultivate the vanishing skill of listening to each other and in this case talk about politics in a civil manner.
Key quotes from the article include:
- I am really worried about our country, about the way we are separated more and more
- By the last exercise, certainty on both sides seems a lot wobblier than it was in the morning
- Applying the four-way test to the idea of having a civil conversation is really appropriate.
Karl mentioned that by applying the four-way test to discussions helps us keep focused on being civil and working better together!
