Each December in Thunder Bay, a quiet tradition continues, focused on seniors who might otherwise experience the holidays alone.

At St. Joseph’s Care Group, the Be Their Secret Santa program supports seniors living in long-term care and assisted living. Many residents are far from family, have limited supports, or no longer have loved ones close by. The program ensures that every participating senior has a thoughtfully chosen gift under the tree, something personal that acknowledges them as an individual, not just a resident.
For some, that gift represents more than the item itself. It reflects the feeling of being part of a wider family, of being remembered during a season so closely tied to connection and tradition.

Lakehead Rotary has supported Be Their Secret Santa year after year, helping ensure the program remains strong and reliable. Rotary members contribute through donations and sponsorships, making it possible for seniors to receive gifts that are practical, meaningful, and chosen with care. The support is consistent and intentional, rooted in long-standing relationships within the community.

What makes this initiative work is its respect for dignity. It doesn’t rely on spectacle or charity for show. It simply meets a real need. In doing so, it helps create a sense of belonging during a time of year when absence can feel especially sharp.

Lakehead Rotary’s ongoing involvement reflects a belief that community means showing up, not just once, but repeatedly. By standing alongside St. Joseph’s Care Group, Rotary helps ensure that seniors are not overlooked and that every December they are still part of the community, still part of the family.
